Blomqvist gets United Autosports call-up for Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
Acura Meyer Shank Racing driver Tom Blomqvist will reunite with United Autosports in a one-off appearance at next week's Chevrolet Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (formerly Mosport). Blomqvist, who won the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen in GTP, will join forces with LMP2 Championship leader Daniel Goldburg in the No. 22 ORECA 07-Gibson.
Blomqvist replaces Goldburg's usual running mate, Paul di Resta, who will be one of a few IMSA LMP2 drivers unavailable for the series' annual Canadian round due to a clash with the WEC 6 Hours of Saõ Paulo on the same weekend.
But since CTMP is one of two IMSA events that won't feature the GTP category, Blomqvist will be available to join United's LMP2 squad for the category's first sprint race of the year.
The two-time Rolex 24 At Daytona winner and 2022 IMSA premier class champion will reunite with United Autosports for the first time since the 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship. In four races with the team, Blomqvist recorded pole positions at Spa-Francorchamps and Bahrain, and finished a season-best second at Spa.
“I’m grateful Daniel and the United Autosports team have entrusted me to fill in for Paul,” said Blomqvist. “We completed a successful test a few weeks back which was good for me to get acquainted again with the team and get some laps under my belt. We’re both coming off a victory last time out in Watkins Glen in our respective classes, so we want to carry that momentum through to Mosport! I’m excited, I love these cars and I love this track, it couldn’t be a better combination.”
“It’s great to have Tom back with the team,” said United Autosports CEO Richard Dean. “He’s fast, reliable and a proven winner … the perfect driver to join Daniel and the No. 22 crew as we go for another strong result in Canada to extend the No. 22’s championship lead.”
With wins at Daytona and Watkins Glen, Goldburg leads the LMP2 Drivers' Championship by 94 points over Riley's Gar Robinson and Felipe Fraga. Goldburg, Di Resta, and Rasmus Lindh also lead the Michelin Endurance Cup standings on countback over Inter Europol Competition's Tom Dillmann and Bijoy Garg.
“It’s just this one race that Paul has the conflict with WEC,” Goldburg said. “I asked around for recommendations of the best driver I could get in the seat and Tom’s name kept coming up. We had a great test at Mosport, so I'm definitely looking forward to the race. Seeing Tom in the winners' circle at Watkins was the icing on the cake ... we both have some momentum right now, so we’re hoping to keep that rolling!”
United Autosports is also due to make another driver announcement for the No. 2 ORECA later this week.
